9/9/97 - The Filament of Comfort... "What the Hell was that?" most Austin folks were saying earlier today. Some blitzkrieg of a rainstorm hit Austin for maybe ten minutes. Knocked power out for three streets. Oh sure, we got our power back, a few hours later, after we actually went OUT to get some errands done. Bleah. Divine intervention to get us to do our work. No, what was weird was that half our apartment had electricity and the other half didn't. Some flunkie electrical engineer from Texas A&M must've zoned our place. Guess which of the power outlets in my room went out? Yep. The one my computer was connected to. No damage to the computer, luckily. Furthermore, that leak we have in the kitchen is water condensing and falling down onto the counter. So we needed to keep the air conditioner off so the condensation could evaporate and the leak could be sealed. Have you ever been in Texas heat? When that sun goes down, it does NOT get cooler. Okay? Just understand that. I'm sweating right now. Windows open, fan on, etc. etc. (yeah yeah, Ben's really roughing it, ain't he?) We're very dependent on all our utilities. I admit it. I need to have an Internet link. I need a computer that's mine. I need A/C, hot/cold water, and so on and so forth. Some people never see any of that in their life. I won't digress into a full explanation about my status of living. Promise. But I get ornery when these things happen. You want to know what the true maddening thing is about all this? I think our A/C just turned on, at midnight, for no reason and no explanation. The world has order? Right! Whoever said that didn't stay at Madison!
